HOW TO HANDLE COUNTEROFFERS

Every employer wants to keep the good and competent employee. So, handing in your resignation letter could trigger them to call you in and make a counteroffer. Do not rush over any decision. Take your time and think about the offers that you have on the table.

Firstly, it important to take into consideration, what made you want to resign in the first place. Don’t let money be the most important thing because money cannot fix everything try taking emotions out of the question.

When you send in your letter and you get a counteroffer from your employer, you should take time and ask yourself why are you of value all of a sudden and why did it take your employer time to realise your potential.

Go through what the counteroffer contains, what will your new job offer you and what made you  decide to leave in the first place.

If your reason for leaving is because of career growth, you want to get more job responsibilities, changes to the nature of your job, you want more work life balance, or changes to your team and line manager and the counteroffer comes back with the promise to have all that fixed, it’s just a false promise to have you remain with them so you should be aware of that.

Think about future opportunities and if the new job is offering you what you desired for and what your current place can’t offer you, then you need to go with what works best for you and makes way for your career growth and fulfilment.

If you decide not to accept your current employers offer, use the opportunity to thank them for their offer and emphasize that you enjoyed working in the organisation, but you have made your decision to leave.
